If you're an artist or an avid music listener then you've most likely heard of NMF or new music Friday. Posted on the most popular day of the week to drop music, blogs of all types and genres will provide a list of new music being dropped that you can't miss out on. If you're an artist trying to gain more exposure and focus on a more engaged audience or someone looking to find the next biggest artist, tapping into NMF lists is a smart move to make.
To the average person NMF is just a long complicated list but to the actual music listeners out there its a treasure hunt to find hidden gems. Even though you may not see the importance of getting on those lists because it's just a name among many, you have to look at the bigger picture. Blogs make those lists because there's an audience for it and that audience is filled with dedicated music listeners always looking for the next new sound of the next upcoming artist to tap into. A&Rs and managers are known to tap into those lists as well so believe it or not, getting your name on those lists can get your name in front of eyes you want. It also creates fomo (fear of missing out) with some people because they don't want to miss out on the music everyone will be listening to according to those lists.
Now you may be asking yourself, "well how do I get on there then?" and the answer can be as simple as just asking. Some may ask for a price but there are many blogs and pages that are willing to add you in for free if they like your music. That right there is the real ticket. Keep in mind that those same blogs and pages receive multiple requests to be added to their list so you got to have patience and a sound that will stand out to them. So go tap into those NMF lists and get your name out there!
Here's a list of some blogs and pages that do new music Friday lists:
