If you’re heading into your first real music video shoot, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed with everything going on. Whether you’re trying to make a strong first impression or just want to come prepared, this article can help set you up for success. I asked four well-known videographers—each with experience working with some of your favorite artists—to break things down by sharing just three simple tips for artists having their first professional music video done. Here’s what they had to say.

  1. Be nice to the crew, and learn everyone’s name and what they do.

  2. Perform the song in the mirror and be ready to make their life easier when recording scenes.

  3. Don't overstep the directors idea unless it's necessary.

  1. Learn the lyrics.

  2. Don’t overthink it, be natural, the more you try to go for a certain look that isn’t true to yourself the more obvious and awkward the video comes off.

  3. Turn clips from the video into short form to get the most bang for your buck.

  1. Make the style of video you truly want to make, not just a copy and paste.

  2. Show your face a lot.

  3. Have an equal amount of planned vs unplanned shots.

  1. Don’t be pussy. This is your video, don’t be worried about what other people think at the shoot, this is your shoot bro.

  2. If a director is asking for something specific there’s a reason, trust their vision.

  3. Most importantly you’re supposed to have fun, enjoy it.
